Abbateggio is a small town set in stunning countryside, surrounded by woods of beech and oak and by the Majella National Park, which makes up two thirds of its surrounding area. This ancient village, famous for its perfectly-conserved buildings, clings to a rocky spur in the valley of Fosso Fonte Vecchia. Visitors will be charmed by its houses of white stone, typical of the region, its narrow, intricate streets and steep flights of steps that invite curious visitors to explore. From the town there are wonderful views and from Massiccio del Gran Sasso you can just make out the sea in the distance. Nearby, and not to be missed, are the stone façade and outer walls of the Shrine of the Madonna of Elcina, which stands alone on the hillside.
