Altamura (BA) Puglia

A city of palaces, churches and cloisters, Altamura is known in the whole country for its famous bread, prepared according to the traditional recipe and baked in wood fired ovens. The Pane di Altamura was the first bakery product to be granted PDO status within Europe. In the surrounding countryside, many fossils have been discovered, the most important is the Altamura Man, an incredibly well preserved Palaeolithic human skeleton. The town hosts architectural elements of great value, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a beautiful example of Apulian Romanesque architecture mixed with the gothic style typical of the time of Frederick II.
