Arpino (FR) Lazio

Arpino is one of the oldest populous centers in the Ciociaria area, with local traditions dating back to its foundation in honour of the god Saturn. Remnants of its past, lost in the mists of time, are its thick “cycloptic” walls, set into which is a distinctive gate: these walls are so thick that they used to shelter the local people from barbarian attacks. Arpino is the birthplace of some important figures, including Caio Mario, Marco Tullio Cicerone and Marco Vipsanio Agrippa, and an inscription above the entrance gate to the town reminds us of its link with these illustrious men. Not far away is the Cistercian Abbey of Casamari, which dates back to the 13th century, a real miniature town which is still a place of pilgrimage and spirituality to this day.
