Called "the balcony of Romagna", Bertinoro is a mediaeval village located on the top of a small hill, from where it looks down onto the vineyards and sunflower fields below. Bertinoro is a Burg of Hospitality and the symbol of this welcoming spirit is the Column of Hospitality, in the town square Piazza della Libertà. Once travellers could tie their horses at one of the rings placed around the column and become the guests of the local family that owned the ring. The Festival of Hospitality celebrates this old tradition.
