Bomarzo

Bomarzo (VT) Lazio

On one of the rocky mountains stretching towards the Tiber valley is Bomarzo, a town that owes its fame to the collection of monuments in the Park of Monsters, also known as the Sacred Grove or the Villa of Wonders. In a forest of conifers and deciduous trees sits this magical place, with its stone sculptures of mythological creatures, gods and monsters, along with buildings of more classical architectural types, creating strange perspectives and confusing the gaze. The park was built by architect Pirro Ligorio and commissioned by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini in 1547. It has amazed and enchanted visitors ever since, with its statues that seem to want to tell their mysterious stories, in a setting of fairy tales, archetypes and myths.
