Calcata is a small fortified town sat on a rocky outcrop in the Treja valley. The town can only be visited on foot, and this is the perfect way of getting a real feel for its character, built on art and a relaxed way of life. Indeed, Calcata is the “town of artists”. Its streets, which are off limits to cars and afford enchanting views of the surrounding area, have, in recent years, been brought back to life by artists, artisans and intellectuals who have moved here, occupying the old abandoned houses and turning them into art studios and workshops for the production of leather goods, ceramics and glass. Calcata has gone from being a town at risk of depopulation to a vibrant place which hosts cultural events every weekend, made all the more enjoyable by the beautiful surroundings.
