Perched on a rocky outcrop in the heart of the Majella National Park rises the town of Caramanico Terme. The surrounding area, which stretches into the beautiful Orfento Valley, includes the nature reserve of the same name. Caramanico is a lively town that traces its origins back to medieval times – origins which can still be seen today in the historic town center with its narrow streets and stone gates. But Caramanico is best known as a spa town: the beneficial properties of its springs, among the most sulfurous in Europe, have been recognized since the end of the 16th century. Between a walk around the center and a visit to the springs, nature lovers should be sure to take in the Park’s visitor center, the Museo Naturalistico “Paolo Barrasso” (Paolo Barrasso Nature Museum) and the wildlife area with its otters’ holts.
