Casteldimezzo, Pesaro (PU) Marche

A small district of the city of Pesaro, Casteldimezzo sits on a hill overlooking the sea. Although it doesn’t sit at a great altitude, on a clear day the town affords long-reaching views right up to Fano and Ravenna. Fought over by various dominions, in Medieval times Casteldimezzo passed through the hands of the Malatesta family, the Sforza family, and finally the Della Rovere family. The legend narrated by an inscription located in the center of the town revolves around the sea: laid siege to by Florentine armies, the town asked for help from the wooden crucifix “brought from the sea”, which resulted in a huge flood which allowed the besieged to fend off the invading forces until they could be liberated.
