Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena is a place where the atmosphere is thick with the memories of times gone by. A medieval village perched on the mountainside at 1000 meters above sea level, it seems almost suspended between the green of the forest and the blue of the sky. The village is a maze of narrow streets leading to the castle, which was once the hub of all life here. The tight, windy alleyways are lined with stone houses and fortified buildings – indeed everything in Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena seems to have a tale to tell about centuries gone by, as if time has mysteriously stood still. While you walk around the village, don’t miss the restored public washhouse, Piazza della Torre (where the gallows once stood), Porta Soprana at the entrance to the village and – next to the Santuario di Nostra Signora delle Grazie – the small, heart-shaped cemetery.
