Just a few kilometers from the sea and the region’s large cities, Spilimbergo is one of the most beautiful and fascinating towns in the area. Situated on the banks of the River Tagliamento, it is a town of ancient origins and enjoyed great prospecting in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The medieval structures live on in the town center, while constant restoration work has preserved the very many art masterpieces which sprung up in the town over the centuries, including the Duomo with its 14th-century frescoes, the castle and its Palazzo Dipinto, the Palazzo degli Spilimbergo di Sopra and indeed the entire historic center. Known around the world on account of its decorative mosaics, Spilimbergo is the home of the prestigious Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, the only institution of its kind in the world since 1922. It teaches Roman, Byzantine and modern mosaic techniques, as well as experimenting with innovative aesthetic and practical solutions for the contemporary age.
