Volpedo

Volpedo (AL) Piemonte

Surrounded by bountiful countryside that provides the delicious, top-quality peaches that have put the town's name on the map, Volpedo also has strong connections to the history of art and in particular to the painter Giuseppe Pelizza. It was in one of the town’s little squares that he painted his masterpiece "The Fourth Estate," which depicts local inhabitants marching with dignity and determination to the Palazzo dei Malaspina to air their grievances. Today this place is known as "Quarto Stato (Fourth Estate"), in honor of the painting, the little square has been restored to its former glory and a streetlamp marks the exact position in which Pellizza placed his easel. A less important work by the artist is on display in the parish church, while other works are housed in his studio, now a museum.
